Hamleh (Green Chickpeas)

The smell of hamleh roasting in my kitchen takes me back to those times of the year to my father’s yard and The hamleh he planted in winter. Those spring warm sunny days, where my mother, my sisters, and I would sit at our backyard porch picking the hamleh from the pods.

So what is hamleh?

Hamleh is the raw, fresh form of chickpeas (a.k.a garbanzo beans, or what we also call hummus hab). Chickpeas don’t grow in cans! Like peas and beans, they grow in pods and vines. They are soft, bright green in fresh fuzzy pods before they fully ripen and turn yellow then dried, cooked, and canned.

I could never help myself munching on the green hamleh while we’re picking ignoring my sister’s advice that it may upset my stomach. Since the green can be heavy on one’s stomach and it’s best eaten roasted.

Hamleh (Green Chickpeas)

Spring is the green chickpeas season; by mid-June, they will have developed into the tougher yellow garbanzo beans. Garbanzo beans are meant for drying. The taste is somewhat a cross between edamame and green peas. Although hamleh is not well known in the US, I always manage to find it at some Indian ethnic stores.

Just like their mature counterparts, green chickpeas are rich in protein and vitamins, and they have antioxidant properties. The method of roasting is very simple wash ,rinse, then place on a flat baking sheet.
